National Honor Society (NHS)
The National Honor Society recognizes outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Students are considered for membership starting at the end of the first semester of junior year. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 4.5, have at least 30 hours of volunteer service dating from the beginning of their freshman academic year, and have strong leadership skills and character as evaluated by LFHS faculty and staff.
Once inducted into NHS, members continue to contribute their leadership and service to many community organizations, such as Roberti Community House, Beacon Place, GLASA, LEAD, PADS, and “Adopt-a-Family” programs. Members must volunteer at least 25 hours of service annually through NHS-sponsored activities, which will be posted and shared via our student-school group. Their NHS peers select an executive committee comprised of 10 members, which is responsible for the organization's day-to-day operations on an annual basis.Applications:
Important Information for Current Juniors/Incoming Members: The NHS Junior Application will open in the spring of each year, at the beginning of February, with an email being sent out to all eligible students (current GPA of 4.5 or higher). Students/parents will be notified via email. The application will consist of:
- Letter of intent and agreement about deadlines
- Application for gathering signatures for service hours, extracurriculars, sports, jobs, and similar experiences. You may begin collecting evidence of your service hours through pictures, certificates, emails, or digital proof.
- Timed essay through Schoology
- 30 service hours completed (counted from day 1 of freshman year until the application deadline) (acceptable hours)
The LFHS Faculty Committee will then review all applications. If accepted, the NHS/Cum Laude induction ceremony will be held in the spring.
Spring Application Deadline: March of junior year (usually end of March) via a Google Form (no paper copies will be accepted)
