Accelerated Placement Program
The Illinois Accelerated Placement Act(1) specifies that a school district’s accelerated placement policy shall allow for the automatic enrollment into the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework if the student meets or exceeds state standards in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, or science on a district-designated state assessment. If a student meets expectations on the ELA portion of the PSAT/SAT, the student will be accelerated in either English, social studies, or world languages. If a student meets expectations on the math portion of the PSAT/SAT, the student will be accelerated in both math and science.
Individual subject acceleration is the practice of assigning a student to a specific content-area course at a higher instructional level than previously designated for that student. This will take the form of accelerating placement into an advanced instructional level as determined by the instructional director. Individual subject acceleration is to ensure that every student has access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in one or more subject areas. Individual subject acceleration takes place regardless of a student’s current coursework or grade status.
If a student’s performance on the PSAT or SAT merits individual subject acceleration, the student’s counselor will automatically enroll the student in the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework. The counselor will work with the student and family to confirm the automatic enrollment. The student and family may opt-out.
If you are interested in further information regarding these acceleration options, please contact the Director of Academic MTSS, Dr. Ryan Abrams, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
1 Enacted in the Spring of 2021, the Illinois Accelerated Placement Act (Public Act 100-0421) specifies that, in the fall of 2023-2024, a school district’s accelerated placement policy shall allow for the automatic enrollment into the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework if the student meets or exceeds state standards in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, or science on a district-designated state assessment. Eligibility for accelerated placement is open to all students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, English language proficiency, or socioeconomic status. District 115’s designated assessment is the PSAT Suite of Assessments (adapted from ISBE).
